New Track: Romance or Rhapsody - 06.21.2008

String Quartet Project - Romance
I started this one in April and is influenced by Tippett’s Fantasia on a Theme of Corelli. Its either going to be called Romance or Rhapsody. I’m working on the score though the bigger the string orchestra the better I think though like Tippett’s Fantasia I imagine it having a solo section in front of the main orchestra. It has taken a long time this one - I always seem to work on a bar or two and then go off and do something else; also the tonality of the piece is probably the most advanced I’ve attempted hence the slightly slow progress….still its not a race. I played it to the Composers Forum Community where it received a very favourable review from a composer I am a big fan of, Daniel Carr:
Very moving piece. Can’t really describe why or how but I really like it. Like the way the individual motifs sort of move in and out. Ends a bit suddenly for my tastes. Certainly think more could be done with this. If extended could imagine some high strings coming in at the end — soaring over the entire ensemble. The individual instruments (viola?) add some nice contrast. Could definitely imagine some non-string instuments (winds in particular) being used
Your pieces usually have a bit of a minimalist feel and this continues that trend.
I really liked this and hope to hear it extended a bit
So it looks like I might have even more work to do!
